about

MISSION

VHF advances the appreciation and conservation of our city’s diverse heritage places and their stories. We raise awareness of the vital contribution that heritage makes to a vibrant, inclusive, and sustainable community.

VHF does this by hosting informative events and creating resources about Vancouver's history and heritage places and providing financial and practical support for the successful conservation of historic buildings and sites.

VHF recognizes the diverse history and cultural heritage of Vancouver and that the city is located on the traditional, ancestral and unceded territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱ wú7mesh (Squamish), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) peoples.

HISTORY

Created as a charitable organization in 1992, the City of Vancouver Mayor and Councillors were VHF’s first Directors and remain Honorary Members today.

Since 1998, VHF has been governed by a private citizen Board comprised of up to 15 voting Directors and 3 non-voting members, who are appointed by Mayor & Council.

In 2022, Vancouver Heritage Foundation celebrated thirty years of making an impact in the community by advancing the appreciation and conservation of our city’s heritage places and their stories.

Each year, VHF hosts educational workshops, lecture series, walking tours, and special events; advances appreciation of Vancouver’s diverse heritage through the award–winning Places That Matter program; provides financial support to homeowners, non-profit building owners, teachers, and authors through a variety of grant programs; encourages the next generation of heritage enthusiasts through its Heritage in Schools program; and offers a wealth of practical and informative resources, including the popular True Colours Paint Palette, neighbourhood map guides, sustainability case studies, and energy retrofit guides.
